Project direction

Build evidence for better hockey decisions.

Hockey Ops Lab is an independent, non-commercial analytics project exploring player impact, team construction, and eventually contract and roster decisions. Its long-term goal is a transparent assistant for front-office questions, not simply another collection of player cards.

ReleasePublic beta

The product is usable and public while models and workflows continue to be tested.

Current modelObserved WAR v0.2

Descriptive regular-season impact with visible components and documented assumptions.

Commercial statusNon-commercial

The project currently uses MoneyPuck data under its public non-commercial terms.

Product principles

How the project earns trust

Transparent

Important scores should expose their inputs, assumptions, sample treatment, and limitations.

Decision-oriented

New work should help answer a real roster, player-value, contract, or team-building question.

Honest about uncertainty

Observed results and future predictions remain clearly separated, with confidence added before forecasts are presented as decisions.

Built in public

Model revisions, including mistakes and recalibrations, are documented as part of the project.

Development path

From evaluation to a GM workspace

  1. NowValidate player and team impact

Audit Observed WAR components, improve comparisons, and establish a dependable public beta.

  2. NextAdd decision context

Introduce player similarity, team needs, uncertainty, and approved contract information.

  3. LaterModel future outcomes

Train chronological next-season predictions and connect them to roster and contract scenarios.

Early feedback

Useful criticism improves the model.

Questions, unexpected results, broken data, and ideas for real front-office workflows are all valuable during the beta.
